What the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and the WHO recommend for preschoolers, and how to fit it into a busy day.

For 3 to 5 year olds, both the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and the WHO say no more than one hour of screen time a day, and the WHO adds that less is better. Pair it with plenty of active play and 10 to 13 hours of sleep.

Between three and five, children change fast. They start preschool, ask a hundred questions a day, and many discover cartoons in a big way. So how much screen time is actually okay at this age? Two major guidelines agree.

How much screen time should a 3 to 5 year old have?

3 to 4WHO: no more than 1 hour a day of sitting-and-watching screen time. Less is better.
2 to 5IAP: up to 1 hour a day, supervised, with good-quality content.
5 to 10IAP: less than 2 hours a day.

Both bodies land in the same place for preschoolers: about an hour at most, watched with a grown-up where possible.

What else does a 3 to 5 year old need each day?

The WHO guideline looks at the whole day, not just screens. For 3 and 4 year olds it recommends at least 180 minutes of physical activity, including at least 60 minutes of energetic play, not being kept sitting or strapped in for more than an hour at a time, and 10 to 13 hours of good-quality sleep, including naps. Seen that way, screens are just one slice of a busy day.

Does educational content count towards the hour?

Yes. Good-quality shows are a better choice, but they still count. Watching together and chatting about what's happening ("Why do you think she's sad?") is what turns screen time into talking time.

How can we keep it to an hour in a busy home?

  • Pick a fixed slot, like after the evening snack, so screens don't leak into every gap.
  • No screens at meals, and none in the hour before bed.
  • Share one simple rule with grandparents and didi, so everyone says the same thing.
  • Have a swap ready: an audio story, the boredom jar or a trip to the park.

Tonight, count up today's screen minutes honestly, including the phone in the auto and the cartoon during breakfast. Just notice. Tomorrow, move one of them.

Quick answers

Is one hour a strict daily limit?

Think of it as an upper limit for an average day, not a target. Some days will be more, many can be less.

Do audio stories count as screen time?

No. Audio stories and songs don't involve a screen, which makes them a great swap for a show.

Does screen time at school count?

The guidelines are about total daily screen time, so it helps to ask what the school uses and plan home time around it.

What counts as good-quality content?

Slow-paced shows with simple stories, without constant ads or autoplay, that you can watch and talk about together.
