Schools usually mark Children's Day with programmes and treats. At home, the best gift is simpler: a day where your child gets to be in charge. It costs nothing, and they'll remember it far longer than a new toy.
When is Children's Day in India, and why 14 November?
India celebrates Children's Day on 14 November, the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's first Prime Minister. He was fondly called Chacha Nehru because of his love for children.
What can we do at home on Children's Day?
- They choose the menu. Breakfast, lunch or the evening snack is their call (within reason).
- Role swap hour. For one hour, they're the parent. They decide the "rules", and you follow them.
- Torch shadow theatre. Lights off, a bedsheet screen, cut-out characters and a torch. Our free game page is below.
- Treasure hunt with clue chits. Each chit leads to the next, ending in a small treat.
- Cushion obstacle course with a stopwatch, so they can try to beat their own time.
- A "when I was little" album. Look through old photos together and let them ask questions.
- Letter to their future self. Older kids write it, younger ones draw it. Seal it for next year.
- Invite the building kids for an hour of dumb charades or antakshari.
Write five "You choose" chits tonight: the snack, the game, the song, the story and the park. Hand them over on the morning of 14 November.
"Tomorrow is your day. What should we do first?"
How do we make the day about them without buying gifts?
What children usually want most is undivided attention. Put your own phone away for the afternoon, follow their plan, and let them see you enjoying it. A day where they're listened to is the gift.
